Rolex’s Datejust is the archetype of the classic watch thanks to functions and aesthetics that never go out of fashion. At its launch in 1945, it was the first self-winding waterproof chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window at 3 o’clock on the dial – hence its name. It consolidated all the major innovations that the brand had contributed to the modern wristwatch until then – chronometric precision (first chronometer certificates granted to a Rolex wristwatch as of 1910), waterproofness (creation of the Oyster case in 1926) and self-winding (mechanism via Perpetual rotor patented in 1931). The Datejust has spanned eras while retaining the enduring aesthetic characteristics that make it so instantly recognizable. The Datejust’s Oyster case, 31, 36 or 41 mm in diameter and guaranteed waterproof to a depth of 100 metres (330 feet), is a paragon of robustness and elegance. The middle case is crafted from a solid block of Oystersteel, a particularly corrosion-resistant alloy, or from 18 ct gold.
About Rolex Watches*
Rolex was founded by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, England in 1905 as Wilsdorf and Davis, Rolex moved its base of operations to Geneva, Switzerland in 1919.
Rolex has three watch lines: Oyster Perpetual, Professional and Cellini (the Cellini line is Rolex’s line of “dress” watches). The primary bracelets for the Oyster line are named Jubilee, Oyster, President, and Pearlmaster. The watch bands on the models are usually either stainless steel, yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold.
When it was launched in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to indicate the date in a window on the dial. Today, it exists in a variety of sizes from 28mm to 41mm, in stainless steel, two-tone gold, and solid gold versions
